The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has represented Macao at the XVI Annual Conference of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) held July 1 to 5 in Portugal.

Hosted by the city of Braga – designated a UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts – the event gathered delegations from around 250 member cities, with MGTO taking the opportunity to raise Macao’s profile internationally. Member cities at this year’s conference came from the seven creative fields covered by the network: crafts and folk art, design, film, literature, media arts, music and gastronomy, with Macao in the latter category.

Under the theme “20 years of UCCN: Bringing youth to the table for the next decade”, the five-day event unfolded with a string of themed plenary sessions.

At a meeting held by the UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy, MGTO director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes spoke about Macao’s experience in organising the first International Cities of Gastronomy Fest in June, which gathered representatives and chefs from 29 Creative Cities of Gastronomy and was the largest international event of gastronomic culture to have been organised in the SAR.

Senna Fernandes extended the invitation for member cities to join the event again next year.

Following its designation in 2017, Macao has been an active member of the UCCN network. In the field of gastronomy there are 56 member cities, including six in China: Chengdu, Shunde, Macao, Yangzhou, Huai’an and Chaozhou.
