Cross-border visitors are returning to Macao in appreciable numbers, with 17,000 recorded on Saturday, the most in a single day since the resumption of quarantine-free travel arrangements with Zhuhai on 3 August.

According to the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), 81,798 arrivals were recorded between 12 August and last Thursday, a daily average of 11,685, representing an increase of 56 per cent compared to the daily average of 7,490 visitors between 5 and 11 August, and an increase of 3,609 per cent compared to the daily average of 315 visitor arrivals last month.

Since yesterday, non-resident foreigners based in mainland China who meet other conditions for border crossing, are no longer required to first obtain authorisation from the Health Bureau (SSM) before entering Macao via mainland China.

In the wake of the further easing of Macao’s entry conditions, the MGTO is reinforcing its tourism promotion campaign.

The marketing drive includes posting a raft of short videos and messages on online social platforms such as WeChat, Weibo, Douyin (TikTok) and Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book).

At the same time, MGTO has also strengthened cooperation with e-commerce platforms and online travel agencies to launch monthly promotions, including providing hotel and flight ticket coupons and carrying out “precision-marketing” initiatives themed Feel Macao, Without Limits to target key groups.

The MGTO will also film some visitors and produce short videos about their itineraries.

Government entities, business organisations and chambers of commerce have joined forces to hold this year’s first Macao Week in Qingdao·Shandong from 8-12 September, The Macau Post Daily reported.
