The head of the central government’s liaison office, Zheng Xincong, says that Macao is at a “strategically important” juncture, with several development opportunities ahead.

He also called on residents to have confidence in the territory’s future and pledged the central government’s continuing support.

Zheng Xincong made the remarks during a meeting yesterday at the liaison office to discuss the outcome of the recently concluded meetings in Beijing of the National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

The liaison office event was attended by Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng and former Chief Executive Edmund Ho, now a vice-chairman of the CPPCC national committee, Macau Post Daily reports.

Ho Iat Seng said that the local government would speed up economic diversification and promote Macao’s recovery as it emerged from the Covid-19 pandemic. He also vowed to push ahead with the development of the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.

Meanwhile, Edmund Ho spoke on the importance of closer integration with the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and called for incentives for young people to pursue their careers in the GBA.
