The new Hengqin cargo station for Macao’s airport will be finished in 2027, according to the Zhuhai Transport Bureau, delaying the timeline from its originally planned completion date of 2026.

The updated estimate follows the release of the Industrial Development Plan for Hengqin Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone from the Zhuhai government last month.

The Hengqin Upstream Cargo Terminal, as the facility will be called, measures 93,000 square meters, and began construction in May on land acquired on the island by Macao’s airport operator. The project is regarded as a key priority under Zhuhai’s industrial plan, being part of a wider initiative to develop the area’s trade.

According to the plan, the cargo station will be used to improve cross-border e-commerce and facilitate the expansion of local e-commerce companies into lusophone markets.

The project was finalised last year, with representatives from Macau International Airport and China Ocean Shipping Group, the two main stakeholders, attending a launch ceremony in December. A statement from the central government’s liaison office in Macao described the project as boosting connectivity for the local aviation and shipping sectors.

When completed, the Hengqin Upstream Cargo Terminal is expected to be capable of handling 300,000 tons of cargo per year. The project is projected to cost around 420 million yuan (US$58.6 million).
