Macao’s Traffic Bureau has announced traffic and transport arrangements for the 33rd Macao International Fireworks Display Contest, which will feature displays on 6, 13 and 20 September, as well as 1 and 6 October.

In a statement yesterday, the authorities said that temporary traffic measures will be implemented around Macau Tower and Avenida do Oceano in Taipa on the eve and day of the competition.

The traffic arrangements include the prohibition of parking around areas such as Avenida Panorâmica do Lago Nam Van, Rua do Lago Sai Van and Rotunda de Leonel de Sousa. Pedestrians will also not be permitted to cross the centrally-located Governador Nobre de Carvalho Bridge between 8 pm and 11 pm on firework nights.

Bus services around Macao Tower will be modified. Among other changes, operation of the temporary bus stop on Avenida Doutour Stanley Ho will be suspended for the entire day on 6 September. The Macau Tower and Praça da Assembleia Legislativa bus stops will also not be in use between 8 pm and 11 pm on competition nights.

Temporary bus stops will be set up on Rua Oeste de Entre Lagos on 6 September, and Praça do Lago Sai Van on those evenings.

Macao’s two public bus operators, TCM and Transmac, will meanwhile be boosting bus services and adjusting the operations of certain lines during the event, in order to ensure the timely dispersal of visitors.

This year’s fireworks display contest will feature 10 teams from around the world. Australia’s Skylighter Fireworks will kick off the first session at 9 pm tomorrow, launching their fireworks from boats located in the waters around Macao Tower. A second performance will be organised by South Africa’s Fireworks for Africa at 9:40 pm.

The following Saturday, South Korea and Austria will stage their own performances. Meanwhile, the Philippines and Japan will light up the skies on 20 September, followed by China and Portugal on 1 October, as well as the UK and Brazil on 6 October.

Speaking to local media earlier this week, the Australian team revealed that its pyrotechnic performance would be based on the theme of the “Great Southern Land” and would showcase Australia’s vast landscape and its rich and multi-faceted culture.

Meanwhile, the South African team said its show would revolve around the theme of the “Serengeti Prairie,” featuring Africa-related music such as the Disney hit “Circle of Life.”

According to the organisers, the best locations to view the fireworks displays include Anim’Arte Nam Van, Avenida de Sagres (adjacent to Mandarin Oriental, Macau), Avenida Dr. Sun Yat Sen, the seaside area at the Macao Science Centre, Avenida do Oceano da Taipa and Caminho Marginal do Lago (next to Treasure Island Resorts).

A number of outreach events have also been organised to support the firework contest, including a photography and student drawing competition.

Overall, the 2025 edition of the competition is budgeted at around 18.06 million patacas (US$2.25 million), with the six casino operators contributing roughly 18 million patacas (US$2.24 million).
