Saturday saw Macao’s first black rainstorm warning hoisted for the year, as severe thunderstorms lead to flooding in various parts of the city.
The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau issued its warning shortly after 11.30 am, indicating that rainfall exceeding 80 millimetres in one hour was expected over extensive areas of Macao.
The peninsula received 117.2 millimetres of rain, according to TDM. Videos posted on social media showed slight flooding at the Border Gate’s immigration checkpoint.

Local businesses were also affected. The owner of one jewellery shop by the Ruins of St. Paul’s told local media that turnover was down by “30 to 40 percent.”
Hong Kong was also hit by Saturday’s torrential downpour, with floods stranding nearly 20 hikers in remote areas.
The unsettled weather in the two SARs has been caused by a trough of low pressure affecting the coastal areas of Guangdong province. Showers are forecast for most of this week.
