Firefighters battling a blaze in a flat in Iat Seng Building on Avenida do Nordeste in Taipa early yesterday morning found an unconscious woman inside.
Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Lou Chan Fai said the 58-year-old victim, surnamed Tong, was rushed to Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for emergency treatment.
The Fire Services Bureau (CB) received a report about the blaze at about 2:20 am and found that the flat’s wooden front door was obstructed by an “object” from the inside when they rushed to the scene.
After pushing the door open, the firemen quickly extinguished the flames and rushed the victim who was crouching on the floor to the hospital.
Most of the only bedrooms in the flat had been burnt, the windows were broken, and other parts of the flat were blackened by smoke.
The woman did not show any carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms at the time firemen found her in the flat. Tong’s current condition is not known.
Lou said the case has been classified as suspected arson.
Firefighters evacuated about 40 residents during the blaze, The Macau Post Daily reported.
