Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes took part in a panel discussion last week at a UN-organised conference on the role of women in sustainable tourism.
The discussion took place during the 2nd Regional Conference on the Empowerment of Women in Tourism in Asia, held in Bali, Indonesia.
According to a statement, Fernandes took the opportunity to highlight the fact that female staffers accounted for more than half of the city’s tourism and related personnel, and that more than 50 percent of travellers visiting Macao were women.

She also acknowledged the toll Covid-19 took on women in the workforce, many of whom shouldered the responsibility of caring for their families during the pandemic.
The MGTO said that the three-day conference helped widen its international networking opportunities and enhanced Macao’s profile within UN Tourism (formerly known as the United Nations World Tourism Organisation).
The event “zeroed in on various challenges and opportunities faced by women in the tourism industry across the region,” it said.
