Macao has secured its first medal at the Asian Games, thanks to wushu athlete Song Chi Kuan’s performance in the men’s changquan final.
Twenty-five-year-old Song earned his bronze medal on Sunday, coming just below China’s Sun Peiyuan and Indonesia’s Edgar Marvelo – winners of the gold and silver medals, respectively.
Wushu is a sport based on Chinese martial arts and changquan emphasises northern Chinese styles of fighting.
“I’m really happy, I feel fantastic because a lot of people came to see me,” Song told TDM in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, where the games are taking place.

“I thank everyone for their support,” he said. “I feel like winning a medal is something I must do.”
Song is one of more than 180 athletes representing Macao at the 19th Asian Games, which were postponed in 2022 owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Games run until 8 October and feature 40 sports, 61 disciplines, and 481 events.
Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng attended the opening ceremony on 23 September, along with a delegation of senior officials.
Macao brought home five medals (two bronze, two silver, and one gold) from the 2018 Asian Games, held in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia.
