As many as 70 local and 20 international performance groups will be permitted to join the 2024 Macao International Parade, slated to take place on 24 March, according to reports.

Each will be eligible for a participation subsidy of between 10,000 and 120,000 patacas – and prize money will also be up for grabs, for the likes of best costume, theme and acting.

Performing associations, schools, institutes and organisations have until 4 February to register their interest in joining the parade.

The crowd-pleasing event is returning from its pandemic hiatus with support from the city’s six gaming concessionaires, Cultural Affairs Bureau president Leong Wai Man told media.

This is also the first year the parade is being held in March, rather than December.

“We considered that it would be more appropriate to organise the parade in March, when spring arrives and the flowers are in bloom, and to avoid coinciding with other large-scale activities,” Leong was quoted as saying.

The official theme the 2024 Macao International Parade is “Love, Peace and Cultural Integration.”

In 2019, the Macao International Parade drew some 1,800 participants and large crowds of spectators.
