Macau and the Philippines signed a new air service agreement, raising the weekly seat entitlements more than 50 percent by renewing a pact signed last year, the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) of Philippines announced on Wednesday.
The new pact expanded the entitlements to 7,020 a week from 4,500 under agreement Manila and the Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China signed last year, CAB executive director Carmelo Arcilla said in a text message to reporters.
The new round of talks with Macau this year was prompted by expectations that Macau will be the new gateway to Hong Kong and other destinations in China, Arcilla noted.
“It is envisioned that the current infra projects in Macau – that would connect Macau by land to Hong Kong and other nearby Chinese cities – would increase the catchment area of Macau and therefore expand market opportunities in Macau,” the CAB official said.
“The new infra projects in Macau will also increase requirements for Filipino workers,” he added.
Current operators servicing the Macau route are Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific Air and AirAsia Zest.
