Macau’s 97 hotels and guesthouses recorded 7.12 million guests in the first eight months of this year, up 14.4 percent on the same period of last year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced Thursday.

The number of hotel guests accounted for 36.4 percent of the number of visitor arrivals in the first eight months.

The average occupancy rate in the eight-month period stood at 81.8 percent, down by 1.5 percentage points from a year earlier.

The number of hotel rooms grew 14.4 percent year-on-year to 27,761 at the end of August. Five-star hotels accounted for two thirds of the total number of guestrooms.

In August, 989,433 guests checked into the city’s hotels and guesthouses, up 12.2 percent year-on-year.

Nearly 60 percent of all guests stayed in 5-star hotels. Guests stayed an average of just 1.3 nights – virtually unchanged from August last year. The average occupancy rate reached 90.3 percent in August.(macaunews)
