Macao recorded 5.7 million visitor arrivals last year, a year-on-year decline of 26 per cent, the Statistics and Census Bureau has announced.
According to the bureau, 5.1 million mainland Chinese visited Macao, accounting for 89.5 per cent of the city’s arrivals last year, while 513,447 Hong Kong residents and 67,303 Taiwan residents also visited.
A total of 241,186 visitors arrived by air.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, in 2019 Macao recorded 39.4 million visitor arrivals. Compared to 2019, Macao’s number of visitor arrivals last year was down by 85.5 per cent.
Macau recorded its first Covid-19 case on 22 January 2020.
Official Covid-19 control measures such as mandatory quarantine and border entry curbs have been drastically eased since early last month, The Macau Post Daily reported.
