Macau, China, 28 Feb – Macau’s total population – comprising residents and imported workers – was estimated at 557,400 at the end of 2011, an increase of 16,800 or 3.1 percent compared with the revised figure of 540,600 at the end of 2010, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said Monday.
The adult population aged between 15 and 64 accounted for 80.8 percent of the total. Those aged under 15 accounted for 11.8 percent of the population, while the elderly aged over 64 made up 7.3 percent, down by 0.6 percentage point and 0.1 percentage point from a year earlier, respectively.
Females accounted for 51.9 percent of the total population, according to official data cited by The Macau Post Daily today.
For the whole of last year, the total number of live births rose 14.4 percent to 5,852. A total of 1,845 deaths were reported last year, up four percent year-on-year, with cancer and diseases of the circulatory and respiratory system as the main causes of death.
In 2011, 4,647 cases of notifiable diseases were recorded, up 1.7 percent, namely influenza (1,556), enterovirus infection (1,184 cases) and pulmonary tuberculosis (339 cases).
A total of 3,545 marriages were recorded last year, an increase of 14.2 percent. The median age of first marriage was 28.2 years for males and 26.5 years for females.
Last year, 6,222 mainlanders legally moved to Macau, while 1,266 illegal immigrants from the mainland were repatriated, down by 31.3 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively.
The number of imported workers rose by 18,215 from the end of 2010 to 94,028 at the end of last year. Imported labour – officially known as “non-resident workers” even though most actually live in Macau – accounted for 16.8 percent.
A total of 2,812 non-locals were granted residency rights last year, down by 1,643 year-on-year.
At the end of last year, the city’s number of households rose 1.7 percent to 172,600.
Based on Macau’s total land area of just 29.7 square kilometres, the city’s population density stood at 18,767 at the end of last year – the highest of any country or territory in the world.(MacauNews/Politics)
