Macau’s population rose to 696,100 at the end of the first quarter, an increase of 16,500 people from the end of last year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said on Monday.
A DSEC statement attributed the population growth to the increased number of non-resident workers living in Macau as some of those initially living elsewhere – mostly in Zhuhai – moved to the city before stringent COVID-19 entry restrictions took effect on February 20.
Macau has been affected by the novel coronavirus epidemic since late January.
Females accounted for 52.2 per cent of the population.
A total of 1,383 live births were recorded in the first quarter, a decrease of 201 quarter-on-quarter. Male babies accounted for 50.8 per cent of the total number of live births. The sex ratio at birth stood at 103.4 males per 100 females in the first quarter.
A total of 530 people died in the first three months of the year. The main causes of death were tumours (170), diseases of the circulatory system (159) and diseases of the respiratory system (80).
The number of non-resident workers at the end of March stood at 189,518, down by 7,020 from the end of last year.
A total of 721 marriage registrations were recorded in the first quarter, down by 174 quarter-on-quarter.
