The Macau government on Thursday rejected the “baseless” claims concerning Macau in the 2019 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices issued by the US Department of State this week.
In a statement released by the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS), the local government expressed its “strong opposition regarding the references to Macau” in the report, adding that the references make claims that are “baseless”, are a “product of political bias” and “arrogant in tone.”
The statement also said that “foreign countries have no right to interfere in China’s domestic affairs and should not interfere in any form in the internal affairs of Macau.”
According to the statement, the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) has since its establishment in December 1999 been strictly adhering to the principles of “One Country, Two Systems”, “Macau people governing Macau”, and “the application of a high degree of autonomy”.
“The successful implementation of these principles has been widely recognised by the international community and agencies,” the statement concluded.
The government said it issued the statement in response to media enquiries about the Macau-related claims.
