The Macao Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said in a statement on Thursday that between the beginning of this year and the end of last month, its officials paid 136 inspections to different construction sites, resulting in the punishment of 27 construction sites for illicitly discharging unfiltered wastewater into public sewers.
According to the statement, the city currently has more than 70 construction sites. The statement warned that when construction workers pour unfiltered mortar wastewater into public sewers, the latter could get clogged.
Mortar is a mixture of cement, sand and water used to join bricks and stones.
The statement urged construction sites to install proper filters to sort out waste before discharging any water into the public sewers.
The statement said IAM officials were inspecting construction sites in Rua da Ribeira do Patane when they found workers discharging unfiltered water into public sewers. The bureau penalised the construction site’s contractor for their illicit action and ensured that they installed new filtering facilities afterwards.
The bureau stressed that it will inspect construction sites more frequently and reminded construction sites, restaurants and automobile repair shops to filter wastewater before discharging it into the public sewers.
