The Health Bureau (SSM) announced Sunday that its annual free flu shots for residents will start today.

According to an SSM statement, the vaccinations will cover the 2018-19 flu season period.

The bureau said that this time it has ordered 150,000 doses of quadrivalent flu vaccine for the seasonal influenza shots. For the 2017-18 period, the bureau provided 140,000 doses of quadrivalent flu vaccines, covering 22 percent of the population.

The vaccination campaign is free of charge for children aged at least six months, young people until the age of 18, pregnant women, those suffering from chronic diseases, obese persons and all those aged at least 50.

Residents working in retirement homes, crèches, kindergartens and primary and secondary schools will also be offered free flu shots, as well as health workers and casino staff who are local residents.

The vaccinations are available at public health centres from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily from Monday to Friday.

Health Bureau officials will visit primary and secondary schools, kindergartens and crèches between October and December to vaccinate pupils, teachers and other staff members there, according to the statement.

The statement points out that Macau’s annual flu season usually peaks between January and March.
