A car caught fire in Avenida da Ponte da Amizade near the Macau Water Treatment Plant (ETAR) in Areia Preta district at about 6 p.m. on Monday, but the driver had a lucky escape.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. No-one needed to be evacuated and no-one was injured in the incident, according to a text message from the Fire Services Bureau (CB).
According to the message, the front of the car was gutted by the blaze.
According to a preliminary investigation by the Fire Services Bureau, overheating of the engine is the possible cause of the fire.
The driver told firefighters that he smelt fuel when driving before the front of his car suddenly burst into flames. He immediately left the car. Traffic was busy due to the peak hour traffic at the time of the incident and the road was temporarily closed, which resulted in major traffic congestion, according to the message.
The Traffic Police Department of the Public Security Police (PSP) have launched an investigation into the incident.
