The zebra crossings on two junctions in the busy Avenida do Coronel Mesquita will be replaced by traffic light-controlled crossings from Saturday, with the aim of ensuring the safety of pedestrians, schoolchildren in particular, the Transport Bureau (DSAT) said in a statement on Wednesday.
The two junctions are outside São João de Brito School in Rua de Pedro Coutinho, and in front of Dom Bosco (Yuet Wah) College in Rua de São João Bosco. Each of the two junctions currently has two zebra crossings.
The statement pointed out that a number of traffic accidents have occurred at the zebra crossing outside Dom Bosco (Yuet Wah) College when vehicles hit pedestrians, apart from the fact that there are many pedestrians crossing the avenue near the college – a primary school – and near São João de Brito School. During peak hours, a large number of pupils and those waiting for public buses at the nearby bus stops cross the one-way avenue on the zebra crossings at the two junctions, the statement said.
The statement said that the bureau has decided to change the four zebra crossings to traffic light-controlled crossings after assessing the traffic situation there.
