Four Macao residents have died, while 3 others remain in a critical condition following a deadly car accident that occurred at around 6 am yesterday on a stretch of Avenida da Amizade near Macao’s Grand Prix Building.

According to multiple media reports, a white private vehicle carrying 5 men and 2 women aged between 19 and 21 lost control and slammed into multiple barriers, a sign post and stone steps from the left-hand side. Photos from the wreckage show the vehicle’s front and windshield completely smashed and twisted, suggesting the impact was made at top speed.

When emergency crews arrived at the scene, they rescued the vehicle’s occupants – reportedly all university students – from the wreckage site located at the foot of the reservoir’s viewing stand. Two were sent to the Kiang Wu Hospital, while the remaining five people received medical attention at the Conde São Januario Hospital.

The driver – a 20-year old woman who had been carrying a valid driver’s license – was later pronounced later, along with two 20-year old men and a 19-year male.

Among those killed was 20-year old footballer, Leon Lai Teng Ng, who had been playing for Macao’s Ching Fung FC and had represented Macao during last year’s 2025 EAFF E-1 Football Championship. In an obituary, the club described Lai as an “extremely talented football player” who faced competitions with “resolute determination” and had “unparalleled enthusiasm for football.”

Meanwhile, the three surviving passengers are suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Law enforcement said the exact cause of the accident is still being investigated, although the police have not ruled out the possibility of it being linked with the car being overloaded, with the driver failing to control the car’s speed at a bend.

Based on a preliminary investigation, no pedestrians were injured during the crash. Investigators also determined that the car had started its journey from a parking space on Rua de Bruxelas in NAPE, driven through Avenida Dr. Sun Yat-Sen and had entered Avenida da Amizade by way of an overpass.

Residents who witnessed the accident or have any relevant information have been urged to contact the Traffic Department at 2837 4214.

At 5 pm yesterday, the authorities finished clearing up the crash site, moving the destroyed barriers and sign to the side of the road. Temporary barriers were also set up to allow staff members from the Macao Water Supply Company to conduct checks on the facilities near the accident.

According to Chinese language media, those walking around the Oceanus casino at the time of the accident reported suddenly hearing a loud smashing sound, which they mistakenly thought was thunder.
