Some 74 percent of local residents are willing to walk for at least 20 minutes on their commutes or other journeys around the city – and will spend nearly half an hour on foot if they need to.
That’s according to a new survey of 769 local respondents between 18 and 44 years of age, carried out by the Macao New Chinese Youth Association between May and June. The association says its findings have implications for developing future pedestrian routes in the SAR.
“The SAR government should use the 20-minute walking distance as the basis to create 20-minute walking systems that are safe, convenient, accessible and friendly,” the deputy direction of the association, Ku Heng Cheong, said during a press conference that was reported by TDM yesterday.

A Transport Advisory Committee member, Ku also pointed out that residents could be encouraged to take more public transportation if future walkways were shielded from the elements, well lit and connected to transport hubs.
While having a cover was considered by 27 percent of respondents as an important feature of a walkway, most (48.4 percent) saw elevators and escalators as the priority, followed by non-slip floors (32.2 percent).
When it came to assessing current Macao’s pedestrian walkway system, 57 percent of survey participants expressed satisfaction with its current state, while 60 percent said walkways should be better connected to bus stations and taxi stands.
