The three Macao residents who survived a local car crash that killed four others on Monday remain in a critical condition, according to local media reports.
Five men and two women aged between 19 and 21 were involved in the accident, which occurred on a section of Avenida da Amizade situated near the Grand Prix Building at around 6:00 am.
The white private vehicle transporting the seven residents – all of whom were reportedly university students – lost control, slamming into multiple barriers, a sign post and stone steps at high speed. Images taken at the time show the car’s front completely smashed, with the vehicle remaining stationary below the reservoir viewing stand.
One of the survivors, a woman, underwent surgery and initially appeared to be in a stable condition, although law enforcement said she was now fighting for her life. Meanwhile, the two other male survivors are still in a critical condition.
The four fatalities from the crash included the car’s 20-year old female driver who had been carrying a valid driver’s licence, as well as three men.
One of the male fatalities was 20-year old football player, Leon Lai Teng Ng, who was part of Macao’s Ching Fung FC, representing the city in events such as the 2025 EAFF E-1 Football Championship last year.
After the accident, the club posted an obituary, remembering Lai as a player who “showcased exceptional talent on the football field” and exhibited “unparalleled enthusiasm” for the sport.

Lai’s death has shaken the local football scene, with the Macau Football Association changing the colour scheme of its website to black and white to mark the tragedy.
The association has also postponed the final two matches of Macao’s top football league (Liga de Elite), which were scheduled to take place tonight at Taipa’s Olympic Sports Centre and would have determined the winner for this season.
According to Macao Daily News, the decision was made to postpone the competition, as Ching Fung FC and Macao’s “small” circle of football players were still reeling from the news of Lai’s passing.
The match between Shao Jiang and Benfica has been delayed until 8 pm tomorrow, while the competition between Chao Pak Kei and Ching Fung will now take place at 6 pm on Sunday.
An investigation is currently being conducted into the causes of the tragedy, with the police noting that the driver was unable to control the speed at a bend. Law enforcement officials also stated that the accident may be connected to the car carrying an excessive number of passengers.
Preliminary investigation also retraced the car’s route, which began from a parking space on Rua de Bruxelas in NAPE before passing through Avenida Dr. Sun Yat-Sen and an overpass to Avenida da Amizade.
