Weixin Pay, also known as WeChat Pay, has launched its first palm payment service outside of the Chinese mainland, the technology’s developer has announced.

Tencent’s touchless payment system is now available at Galaxy Macau, in collaboration with ICBC. This covers more than 60 stores and retail locations across StarWorld Hotel, Galaxy Macau, Broadway Macau, and Galaxy Arena.

Palm Pay is an option for Weixin users who have activated both their Weixin Pay RMB e-wallet and Weixin Palm Pay feature, allowing them to pay with a wave of their hand. The technology involves what Tencent describes as “a new type of camera” that recognises both the lines on the palm of your hand and the veins within it.

Palm Pay was introduced in the mainland in May 2023 and means that you can make payments even if you don’t have your phone with you or if your phone has run out of battery.

“Weixin Palm Pay is already widely used in retail, dining, transportation, power banks rentals, and other scenarios in the Chinese mainland,” said Kai Xia, head of Weixin Pay Hardware Innovation. “Now, with its launch in Macao, we hope to use technology to bring more convenience to users at Galaxy Macau and enhance their shopping and payment experiences.”

Weixin Pay will continue working closely with partners to expand the payment network in the SAR, Tencent’s statement said.
