Macao’s summer tourism surge saw 3,221,691 visitors arrive in August – a month-to-month increase of nearly 17 percent, the Statistics and Census Service says.
Same-day visitors totalled 1,653,866 – more than 51 percent of the total. Overnight visitors stayed for a fractionally shorter period on average, down to 2.2 days from 2.3 days in July.
Macao remains overwhelmingly dependent on domestic tourism. The proportion of visitors from mainland China increased by more than 2 percent month to month, to stand at over 72 percent of the total. Hong Kong and Taiwan visitors made up 24 percent of all arrivals, meaning that foreigners comprised just 4 percent of all visitors.

Nearly half of all visitors arrived via the Border Gate checkpoint and almost a quarter via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Some 13 percent came by ferry and 7 percent by air.
According to TDM, a post-pandemic high of around 139,000 visitors entered Macao on 12 August.
Since then, average daily visitor numbers have tailed off, but the MGTO expects figures to recover during the Mid-Autumn festival on 29 September and the week of holidays following National Day celebrations on 1 October.
