The 12th edition of the World Games opened last night against the backdrop of the Tianfu International Convention Centre and Qinhuang Lake in Chengdu, attracting about 10,000 spectators.
A highlight of the ceremony occurred when Chinese water-skiers Xu Lu and Alu Xiaobo glided across the lake to light the main cauldron after receiving torches from snooker player Ding Junhui and trampoline champion Dong Dong. “If fire and water can coexist in harmony, then all conflicts in the world can be reconciled,” said Hu Xiao, the general director of the opening ceremony.
This year’s games are the largest ever, with a record 6,679 athletes and officials from 116 countries competing in 256 events across 34 sports, according to Xinhua.

According to media reports, Sichuan province is offering benefits like free entry and discounts to tourist attractions for athletes, staff, and volunteers of the games from 3 to 17 August. A total of 104 scenic spots are covered, including Jiuzhaigou National Park and Mount Emei.
