Gao Fangjie and Ng Ka Long win gold at the Macau Open Badminton Championships

The six-day Sands China Macau Open Badminton 2024 tournament concluded yesterday, with Gao Fangjie of mainland China bagging the top prize in the women’s singles and Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long emerging as the champion in the men’s singles.

According to the HSBC BWF World Tour, world number 32 Gao came out on top against Chinese Taipei’s Lin Hsiang Ti, ranked 65 globally, with a score of 21-23, 21-9, 21-11. 

Ng, who is ranked world number 25, defeated his Singaporean opponent, world number 45 Jason Teh Jia Heng, in the men’s finals with a score of 21-19, 21-17. 

In the doubles events, mainland China dominated in all three categories. Chen Xu Jun and Liu Yi defeated Indonesia’s Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani 21-18, 21-14 in the men’s doubles.

Li Wenmei and Zhang Shuxian similarly bagged first prize in the women’s doubles against Chinese Taipei’s Hsieh Pei Shan and Hung En-Tzu, defeating them 25-23, 18-21, 22-20. 

Chen Fanghui and Guo Xinwa and were meanwhile crowned the winners of the mixed doubles after beating their Indonesian counterparts, Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja and Dejan Ferdinansyah 21-15, 21-18. 

Winners of the competition share a prize pool worth 1.68 million patacas  (US$210,000). 

Scheduled between 24 and 29 September, the Macau Open Badminton 2024 championship marked a return for the event to the city after an absence of four years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was the first major international badminton event to be held following the Paris Olympic Games in August.
