Three local karate athletes bagged the silver medal for their team’s category on Sunday, the last day of the 19th Asian Games.

The trio – Kuok Kin Hang, 30; Fong Man Hou, 21; and Cheang Pei Lok, 18 – came second to Japan in the men’s team karate final. The scores were a respective 41.7 to 44.5.

The silver brought Macao’s total medal tally to six for the year. That’s one more than it achieved in the 18th Asian Games, held in 2018, but one fewer than from the 2014 iteration.

The SAR earned one gold, three silver, and two bronze medals this year – all in martial arts events. The haul means Macao is ranked 25th overall on the medal table, out of 41 countries and regions that took part in the 19th Asian Games.

Kuok not only helped his team win silver on Sunday, but also bagged his own silver medal in the men’s individual karate event last week.

On Sunday, Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng sent a congratulatory letter to Macao’s 183-strong delegation of athletes and their support crew – praising their tenacity and hard work.

The 19th Asian Games were held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, from 23 September to 8 October. China came out on top, earning 383 medals in total. Japan came next, followed by South Korea.

Macao’s neighbouring SAR, Hong Kong, bagged a record-breaking 53 medals and came 12th overall in the rankings.
