This year’s Macao Arts Festival will take place in May, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) has confirmed.
So far, eight programmes have been locked in. Highlights include a reimagining of Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book produced by the celebrated British choreographer Akram Khan, and the contemporary ballet Sleeping Beauty, presented by Spanish National Dance Award winner Marcos Morau and France’s Lyon Opera Ballet.
Australia’s Circa ensemble will perform Duck Pond, a cross between Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake and Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Ugly Duckling – promising “a joyful and intriguing theatrical experience,” according to the bureau.

The festival will also include a performance of Macbettu, a Sardinian interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Macbeth, and an adaptation of British playwright Peter Shaffer’s Equus.
A special “baby theatre production,” designed for youngsters up to three years of age, will be performed by Poland’s Ban Theatre, while veteran Hong Kong singer Frances Yip will appear with the Macao Chinese Orchestra.
