The Macao Open is back for the first time in years and takes place this week as part of the 2023 Asian Tour.

This year’s event is the tournament’s 20th iteration, with SJM Resorts taking the sponsorship helm. Satoshi Oide was the victor at the first Macao Open in 1998. Since then, the tournament has grown with big-name golfers like Lee Westwood, who won the Macao Open in 1999, and former world number one Fred Couples, who took part in the 2005 competition.

Here’s the lowdown on this year’s Open, where players will compete for a US$1 million prize pool.

When and where will the 2023 SJM Macao Open take place?

Mark your diary from 12 to 15 October. The competition takes place at the Macau Golf and Country Club, where it has been held since its launch in 1998.

Who’s playing?

The roster is made up of 144 players. The last three winners of the Macao Open, India’s Gagnjeet Bhullar, Thailand’s Pavit Tangkamolprasert and Scott Hend will all feature in the tournament. Defending champion Bhullar and Hend have won the tournament twice so far and will look to grab a third this year.

The two will also be joined by Taipei’s Chan Shih-chang, a five-time Asian Tour winner, Philippines’ Miguel Tabuena, who has three Asian Tour titles, and Australian Wade Ormsby, who has won four times on the circuit. Thailand will send more than 25 players to the tournament with the country’s number one Sadom Kaewkanjana leading the way.

Currently rising through the ranks is Australia’s Min Woo Lee (ranked 46th globally). “I’ve heard so many great things about the event and the venue, Macau Golf and Country Club, and hopefully I will be able to add my name to the illustrious list of winners,” the 25-year-old told media.

Look out for the young talents at the 2023 SJM Macao Open as well. In March this year, Hong Kong’s Taichi Kho won the World City Championship at the Hong Kong Golf Club. The 22-year-old also claimed a gold medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou.

Kho will feature at the tournament alongside up-and-coming local talents, Hun Pui-In and Kaijun Ma.

Where can I stay the night?
