One of Macao’s most storied restaurants, A Vencedora, has opened under new management.

Restaurateur Simon Chan told Macau Post Daily that he was “a friend” of the Lam family, who founded the restaurant. He said that by reopening the 106-year-old establishment he hoped to “preserve the characteristics of Macau’s culinary industry.”

He said the features of the restaurant – its name, interior, and Portuguese and Macanese menu – would remain unchanged, along with many of the staff.

“I always ask my colleagues to keep at least the same standard as before and even do better than before, whether it’s in terms of food or service,” he told Macau Post Daily. “I want to make the food better to bring back the old customers, while attracting new ones.”

He also promised not to raise prices – an ambitious pledge in the currently difficult operating environment for local restaurants.

The news of the restaurant’s revival will come as a total surprise to local diners, who bade the eatery an emotional farewell when it closed last November, seemingly for good.

At the time, owners Lam Kok Lon and Lam Kok Veng told Macao News that they decided to retire and close the restaurant for good due to the lack of a successor.

Chan, who started eating at A Vencedora when still in secondary school, said he looked forward to welcoming people back to the eatery. “Many guests told me that when they step into this kind of old restaurant, they feel like they are back home,” he said.
