The Macao International Art Biennale, known as Art Macao, launches its main exhibition on 19 July with “two special activities” that promise to extend artistic dialogue through interactive experiences for the public, the Cultural Affairs Bureau has announced.

One of these will see chief curator Feng Boyi joined by co-curators Liu Gang and Wu Wei, along with participating artists Song Dong and Xue Feng for a public discussion addressing this year’s curatorial themes and challenges. The group will offer insights into the conceptual and logistical process behind the Biennale.

Their talk will be held in Mandarin with simultaneous English interpretation. It takes place at 3 pm on Saturday, at the Macao Museum of Art (MAM).

The second activity involves Taiwanese artist Chan Hung-Lu leading two sessions of a workshop titled Exploration of Inner Aliens, also on Saturday. Conducted in Mandarin, the workshops will use meditation and AI-generated imagery to help participants visualise and reflect on their internalised sense of otherness.

Meanwhile participants are currently being recruited for another outreach programme. MAM is calling for same-gender, similar appearance pairs of volunteers – twins are preferred – to engage in live performances as part of German artist Gregor Schneider’s installation, “Twin Illusions.” Training will be given.

Registration is mandatory for the above activities, and can be done via your Macao One Account.

Art Macao’s Main Exhibition features 46 artists from 13 countries and regions, with nearly 80 works displayed across MAM. Other parts of the Biennale, which takes place across the city, include the Public Art Exhibition, the City Pavilion, the Special Exhibition, the Local Curatorial Project and the Collateral Exhibition.
This year’s theme is “Hey, what brings you here?” and the programme runs until October. Full details can be found at Art Macao’s website.
