Chan On Kei: Beauty’s contradictions in clay

PUBLISHED

“I think women often endure a lot in the pursuit of beauty. It can be quite exhausting.” Contemporary artist Chan On Kei’s work explores themes around women, and complex emotions around beauty. Through her ceramics, sculpture, and mixed media, her work examines the demands placed on women—physical, temporal, emotional—by beauty’s often contradictory ideals.

Drawing from personal experience, Chan’s quest in unearthing “the love-hate relationship in chasing beauty” brings new forms to life in unexpected ways.
