There’s a new luxury resort boasting sweeping sea views on an island off the coast of Macao: the Alila Dong’ao Island Zhuhai. Its April opening marked Alila’s first “island resort” in Greater China, according to a press release from Hyatt Group – which owns the brand.

Accessible via a 40-minute ferry ride from Xianzhou Port in northern Zhuhai, the 104-suite resort has been designed to blend “harmoniously with its rugged cliff top setting”, the statement read. Granite and greystone boulders, used in its construction, help buildings visually merge with Dong’ao Island’s (東澳島) natural rock formations.

Suites look out to sea or into leafy private courtyards, while their interiors – designed by the award-winning Ju Bin – feature Lingnan-inspired decorations and artworks, Hyatt said. Some have their own tearooms; others boast private pools.

Alila Dong’ao Island Zhuhai is equipped with two restaurants, each emphasising seasonal, farm-to-table Cantonese cuisine. At Chun Bar, sunset is saluted each day “by the striking of a singing bowl to ring in the evening”, according the statement.

For those in search of pampering, Spa Alila offers four treatment rooms, sauna rooms, a hammam, a Himalayan salt room and what’s been described as a “vitality pool”. A range of treatments are available, including some using moonstones and “ancient healing techniques”.

The resort also boasts more than 460 square metres of event space.

“We are thrilled to open our doors in this extraordinary destination, offering a luxury experience crafted with the artisanal touch that Alila is renowned for,” said the resort’s general manager, Chua Thin Thin.

“Whether exploring the environment through island activities or immersing in moments of self and cultural discovery, our resort provides the setting for an unforgettable experience amidst innovative design that honours our surroundings.”

A night for two, including breakfast, in May starts at 3,500 yuan when booked via Hyatt’s website.
