The Public Security Police (PSP) predicted a five percent year-on-year increase in the number of locals and visitors passing through Macau’s border checkpoints during the National Day “Golden Week” which starts tomorrow, PSP spokesman Lei Tak Fai said on Tuesday.
According to a PSP statement, nearly three million border crossings were recorded during the same period last year.
Lei made the prediction at a regular press briefing, saying that the police would take various measures to tackle the expected rise in border crossings.
“We’ll temporarily suspend police officers’ leave [during the period] and allocate back office personnel to operate extra [immigration] counters,” Lei said. He also said additional security guards would be deployed to provide crowd management support at border checkpoints. Lei also said the PSP would implement crowd control measures “if necessary” in and around Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro.
According to Lei, the police will continue to work with the Transport Bureau (DSAT) to enforce measures against taxi malpractices such as overcharging and refusal of service. The spokesman also said residents and visitors may check via the PSP’s website and mobile phone application the estimated waiting times at border checkpoints.
