Macao has once again suffered weak visitor numbers, with the pandemic situation driving arrivals down sharply both last month and compared to last year.
The Statistics and Census Service reported that visitor arrivals declined by 54.3 per cent year-on-year and 36.8 per cent month-on-month to 366,511 in November.
Year-on-year, overnight visitors (196,279) fell by 31.7 per cent and same-day visitors (170,232) were down 66.9 per cent. Visitors’ average length of stay extended by 0.6 days year-on-year to 1.9 days; the duration for overnight visitors (3.5 days) increased by 0.1 days, whereas the figure for same-day visitors (0.1 day) remained unchanged.
The number of visitors from mainland China slid by 56.8 per cent year-on-year to 320,267, with 116,890 visitors travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme. Visitors from the nine cities in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) totalled 184,163; unsurprisingly 48.1 per cent came from Zhuhai. There were 38,562 visitors from Hong Kong and 5,569 from Taiwan.
Analysed by checkpoint, arrivals by land fell by 58 per cent year-on-year to 320,130 in November; among them, 63 per cent travelled through the Border Gate and 21.9 per cent came via the Hengqin port. Visitor arrivals by air totalled 27,313, while 19,068 came by sea.
In the first eleven months of 2022, visitor arrivals dropped by 22.9 per cent year-on-year to 5,310,949; same-day visitors (3,056,366) went down by 14.7 per cent and overnight visitors (2,254,583) fell by 31.7 per cent. The average length of stay of visitors decreased by 0.1 day year-on-year to 1.5 days; figures were unchanged for same-day visitors (0.1 day) while overnight visitors’ (3.3 days) rose by 0.1 day.
