The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) is studying the development of new tourism routes in the city in order to give other alternatives to tourists that visit mainly the area near the ruins of St. Paul.
“Our technicians have been walking around the historical areas, trying to see possible alternative routes to promote, so that tourists can easily walk around town,” said MGTO director, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, speaking Wednesday during a lunch at the British Business Association of Macau.
The aim is not only to ease overcrowding, but also to show tourists that Macau has more to offer than three or four main attractions.
In addition, the development of new itineraries is expected to boost local businesses outside the main historical streets.
According to Helena de Senna Fernandes, “MGTO is planning different routes but it is not possible to have them all ready by October”, when the National Day holidays will take place and Macau will receive millions of mainland tourists.
Senna Fernandes also emphasized the need to broaden tourists’ horizons, by redirecting them to other parts of Macau.
The MGTO director explained that they are conducting studies to turn the Sao Lazaro district in a more tourist friendly area, encouraging visitors to also explore Tap Seac Square, Flora Garden and from there the Guia Hill, using the cable car.
Helena Senna Fernandes also said that in its attempt to diversify its tourist offerings, the MGTO want to convince more tourists to cross the bridge to Taipa and Coloane.
“ We are working with the IACM on a project for Coloane island, which involves the development of houses on the water” she said without giving details. (macaunews)
