The Unitary Police Service (SPU) briefed the media on Thursday about the police’s two-month Thunderbolt 16 operation to combat crime, primarily in night entertainment venues, that started in July and finished on Wednesday.
A special press conference was held on the SPU’s premises in Nam Van to announce the results of the anti-crime sweep.
According to Assistant to Commissioner-General of the Unitary Police Service João Augusto da Rosa, the Judiciary Police (PJ) and Public Security Police (PSP) took part in 760 operations between July 22 and Wednesday, pointing out that the raids were led by the Unitary Police Service.
Augusto da Rosa said that 1,085 people, suspected of involvement in 824 cases, were transferred to the judicial authorities during the operation.
Thunderbolt 16 was a regional operation involving the police in Macau, Hong Kong and Guangdong.
The suspected crimes found during the operation in Macau included drug trafficking and taking, pimping, loan-sharking, assault and fraud, among other crimes related to gaming activities, according to Augusto da Rosa.
The operation, which is held by the three jurisdictions every year, has achieved its purpose by combating crime and keeping the city safe, Augusto da Rosa said.
A total of 967 people were deported from Macau during the two months, Augusto da Rosa said.
In Hong Kong, the operation netted 2,120 people believed to be connected with triad, vice and dangerous drugs offences, Hong Kong police announced on Thursday, according to newswire reports. (Macau News / The Macau Post Daily)
