Macau’s number of visitor arrivals from Japan rose 25 percent to 24,208 in June, the highest year-on-year growth of any major visitor segment in that month, according to data released by the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) Wednesday.

The number of South Korean visitors grew 24.5 percent year-on-year to 41,786 last month.

June’s total number of visitor arrivals rose just 4.6 percent year-on-year to 2.4 million. Mainlanders accounted for 65.7 percent of all arrivals. The number of visitors from the mainland grew 9.1 percent year-on-year to 1.59 million last month.

A total of 513,561 Hong Kong citizens visited Macau last month, down eight percent from a year earlier. The number of visitors from Taiwan rose 12.5 percent to 85,350 in June.

Visitors from the mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan combined accounted for 90.3 percent off the total number of visitors in June.

A DSEC statement pointed out that growth in visitor arrivals slowed after the strong increases recorded during the Easter (in Hong Kong) and Labour Day (in the mainland) holidays.

The US was the only non-Asian country whose number of visitor arrivals in Macau exceeded 10,000 last month, reaching 15,317, up 2.7 percent.

Visitors’ average length of stay last month remained unchanged at just one day.

Same-day visitors accounted for 53.3 percent of the total number of visitors.

In the first half of the year, visitor arrivals rose eight percent to 15.28 million.(macaunews/macaupost)
