Macau’s hotels and guesthouses recorded 3.35 million guests in the first quarter, a year-on-year growth of 9.2 percent, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said in a statement on Monday.
The average occupancy rate of the city’s 115 hotels and guesthouses rose by 5.3 percentage points to 88.8 percent.
Guests’ average length of stay increased by 0.1 night to 1.5 nights.
According to the Macau Post Daily, visitor-guests accounted for 73 percent of the total number of overnight visitors, down slightly by 0.6 percentage point year on year.
In the first quarter, seven new hotels and guesthouses opened for business. The number of guest rooms grew by 6.4 percent to 39,000, with 5-star hotel rooms rising by 8.5 percent to 24,000, accounting for 61.2 percent of the total.
In March, the number of guests rose by 8.2 percent to 1.14 million. The number of mainland guests rose 9.5 percent to 768,000, accounting for 67.2 percent of all guests in March. The number of Hong Kong and Taiwan guests reached 131,000 (+1.2 percent) and 39,000 (+4.1 percent).
South Koreans, the hotel sector’s biggest foreign guest segment, rose by 11.2 percent to 41,000.
