Macau, China, 16 May – Hong Kong-listed Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) held a grand opening ceremony on Sunday for its US$1.9 billion hotel resort in Macau’s Cotai Strip, focusing on Asian visitors.
Themed ‘World Class, Asian Heart’, the 550,000-square-meter Southeast Asian-style Galaxy Macau mega-resort comprises three hotel brands, namely Galaxy Hotel , Singapore ‘s Banyan Tree Hotel and Japan ‘s Okura Hotel, offering a total of 2,200 rooms and over 50 food and beverage outlets, most of them featuring Asian cuisines.
The resort also boasts a 52,000-square-meter so-called Grand Resort Deck, complete with 350-ton white sand man-made beach and a 4,000- square-meter rooftop wave pool, the world’s largest of its kind, generating waves that reach as high as 1.5 meters.
In addition, tropical and Japanese gardens, a traditional Japanese tea pavilion and ‘abanas’ are part of the so-called Grand Resort Deck area.
The resort’s casino will initially have 450 gaming tables and 1,100 slot machines.
‘Galaxy Macau offers every visitor from the Greater China region, the rest of Asia and beyond a taste of heartfelt Asian hospitality,’ GEG Vice Chairman Francis Lui said in his opening speech.
Galaxy Macau became the third integrated destination resort in Cotai, following Las Vegas Sands’s Venetian in 2007 and Melco Crown Entertainment’s City of Dreams in 2009.
Macau Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On, former Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa, ex-Macau Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah and other officials attended the colourful opening ceremony.
With the opening of Galaxy Macau, there are 34 casinos in Macau. Galaxy Entertainment Group owns six casinos.(MacauNews/Tourism)
