1 million hotel guests in Macau during August

Macau’s 105 hotels recorded 1.07 million guests in August, a year-on-year increase of 7.7 per cent, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced on Friday.

Guests from the mainland (688,000), Hong Kong (178,000) and Taiwan (40,000) rose 5.5 per cent, 14.3 percent and 11.8 per cent respectively.

The number of guests from South Korea leapt 40.3 per cent to 28,000.

Guests’ average length of stay remained unchanged from a year earlier at 1.4 nights. The hospitality sector’s average occupancy rate reached 90.3 per cent in August, the highest since February 2014, up by 4.1 percentage points year-on-year.

The number of guestrooms stood at 33,000, 3,400 more than in August last year. Guestrooms in 5-star hotels accounted for two thirds of the total number.

In the first eight months, the hospitality industry welcomed 7.56 million guests, up 12 per cent year-on-year.
