Non-local workers accounted for 20.5 percent of Macau’s population at the end of June, according to data released by the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) on Friday.
Non-local workers totalled 121,194 at the end of the second quarter, an increase of 6,478 quarter-to-quarter.
Macau’s population rose to 591,900 at the end of the second quarter, 5,600 more than at the end of the previous quarter.
Based on Macau’s land area of 29.9 square kilometres, its population density stood at 19,795 people per square kilometre at the end of June.
According to The Macau Post Daily, Macau is reputed to have the world’s highest population density of any country or territory, ahead of Monaco’s 15,250 people per square kilometre. The principality in southern France, which covers just two square kilometres, had a population of 30,500 in June.
Mainlanders accounted for 61 percent of all non-local workers in Macau at the end of June. Philippine nationals made up 14.6 percent of the total number of non-local workers. Vietnamese accounted for 9.3 percent of the city’s imported labour at the end of June.
Females accounted for 51.7 percent of Macau’s population at the end of June.
In the second quarter, 842 males and 682 females were born, resulting in a markedly skewed newborn gender ratio of 123.5, corresponding to 123.5 male per 100 female newborns.
A total of 800 mainland Chinese were given local residency in the second quarter, up 17.6 percent quarter-to-quarter. (macaunews)
