The Macau Chief Executive Chui Sai On and the Governor of Fujian Province Yu Weiguo said they planned to take part in the “One Belt, One Road” national initiative and expressed confidence in further development of bilateral cooperation, said the Macau Government Information Bureau on Wednesday.

The Macau and Fujian government delegations also took advantage of the meeting to exchange views on various areas, particularly trade and investment, more competitive industries and exchange between populations.

The parties stressed the importance of the meeting in the tradition of strengthening the friendship and cooperation between Fujian and Macau, as well as the use of geographical, human and cultural relations advantages, in order to reach consensus and join forces, to coordinate with the “One Belt, One Road” initiative.

Fujian province is part of the core region of the 21st century Maritime Silk Route. Macau has its own advantages “and the two territories have a good basis for cooperation and great potential for joint participation in the initiative ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative” the statement said.

The two territories, through their complementary advantages, will strengthen official cooperation and exchange between populations to transform Macau into “a centre and a platform” and modernise Fujian with efficient mechanisms, quality industries and a better ecological environment and take part and support each other in “One Belt, One Road.”

The same meeting mentioned that Macau is operating as a service platform for trade cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries, taking advantage of the central government’s support policies to boost cooperation between Fujian and the countries involved in the same initiative, especially the Portuguese-speaking countries and from Southeast Asia.

In addition, Macau will enhance integration of the initiative in major local convention and exhibition events, which will serve the province and be opportunities for sharing knowledge and development.

Macau can also consider, together with Fujian, strengthening tourism cooperation between the two territories within the context of the”One Belt, One Road” initiative and accelerate the development of this initiative in world markets.

The Macau delegation is due to have meetings in Guangzhou with the same objective this Friday.
