Macau will dedicate more contributions to China’s development strategy while making progress for the special administrative region (SAR)’s long-term prosperity, Chief Executive of Macau, Chui Sai On said at a National Day reception event held on Sunday.
According to the Xinhua news agency, Chui said that the national development strategy and further deepening of regional cooperation would provide Macau with unprecedented opportunities to accelerate economic diversification.
The reception, hosted by the government to celebrate the 68th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, was held at Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre with some 750 guests.
Chui outlined four routes to propel further development, ensure socio-economic stability and cope with uncertainties arising from global economy, including strengthen quality of governance to realize long-term prosperity and stability.
He also said that the government would continue to strengthen regulation of the gaming industry, and the promotion on the MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) industry, traditional Chinese medicine, specialized financial services, as well as cultural and creative industries.
Macau would make best use of the opportunities arising from the Belt and Road Initiative, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, while enhancing its functions in China’s opening up and economic development, he added.
In his speech, the chief executive mentioned that Macau was hit in August by the strongest typhoon of the past half century, causing serious casualties and financial losses. The government has deployed its maximum effort to cope with the post-typhoon work, with the strong support of the Chinese central government.
Chui said that the SAR government would spare no effort in providing appropriate support to ease difficulties brought by typhoon disaster. In addition, the government has initiated reviews and optimization on the SAR’s infrastructure and its contingency mechanism for major disasters.
