Macao’s governance gets a tick of approval from President Xi Jinping

Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng has travelled to Beijing and presented the work carried out by his administration this year to President Xi.

Macao’s governance achievements over the past year were praised at a meeting in Beijing yesterday between President Xi Jinping and Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng, according to an official readout. President Xi noted that Macao had developed its first comprehensive plan for economic diversification, and strengthened management of the gaming sector, under Ho’s leadership. He commended efforts Ho’s government had made to safeguard national security through legislative amendments and acknowledged progress in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin. [See more: Here are the highlights from the Chief Executive’s Policy Address Q&A session] President Xi also praised Macao’s readiness to cooperate with other countries and territories.  He noted that Macao had achieved a rapid economic recovery and offered the continued support of the central government to the local authorities. Ho is due back in Macao today, in time to celebrate the 24th anniversary of the territory’s administrative handover to China, which takes place tomorrow.
