17 newbies among local members for 13th CPPCC

Among the 37 local members of the upcoming 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), 17 are newcomers, or 46 percent of the total, while the remainder have been reappointed.

Among the 37 local members of the upcoming 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), 17 are newcomers, or 46 percent of the total, while the remainder have been reappointed.

Consisting of 2,158 names, the full list of members of the 13th CP- PCC National Committee was approved at the 24th session of the Standing Committee of the 12th CP- PCC National Committee, which concluded on Wednesday.

The new term of the CPPCC National Committee will start in March.
The number of members from Macau for the new term (13th) of the CPPCC National Committee remains unchanged from the current 12th CPPCC National Committee.

Former chief executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah, a vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, is among the reappointed members.

According to The Macau Post Daily, the 37 CPPCC National Committee members from Macau comprise 29 members “invited from Macau” and eight members who belong to other sectors such as business, education and social services.

The 17 newly appointed CPPCC National Committee members from Macau include O Lam, chief-of-cabinet of the Chief Executive Office (GCE), Macau Foundation (FM) President Wu Zhiliang, and Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ) Director Leong Lai who will retire early next month.

The 17 newly appointed members also include directly-elected lawmaker Ho Ion Sang and indirectly-elected legislators Chan Hong and Vong Hin Fai.

Former Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Cheong U is also among the newly appointed members. The remaining 10 members among the 17 newcomers are Cheong Meng Seng, Fu Jianguo, Fu Tiesheng, Ho Fu Keong, Leong Su Sam, Lou Wai Sek, Suen Yan Kwong, Wan Nang Hon, Wong Cheng Wai, and Zhang Zongzhen.

The 17 members from Macau in the current 12th CPPCC National Committee who were not reappointed include former secretary for economy and finance Francis Tam Pak Yuen, former Legislative Assembly (AL) president Susana Chou, and SJM Chairman Ambrose So Shu Fai.

The 17 members who were not reappointed also include prominent property developer and former lawmaker Fong Chi Keong, as well as Macau General Union of Neighbourhood Associations I (Kai Fong) President Ng Sio Lai, who was elected as a local deputy to the 13,h National People’s Congress (NPC).

‘The 17 members not reap-pointed also include Ng Lap Seng, a prominent business-man who was convicted in the United States last year for bribing United Nations officials, as well as Or Wai Sheun, the chairman of Hong Kong-based Polytec, the developer of the ill-fated Pearl Horizon residential project which has been mothballed since late 2015 when its, provisional land concession expired.

Polytec is suing the local government over the land concession’s cancellation.

In addition to Edmund Ho, the 20 members who were reappointed include businessman and former lawmaker Chan Meng Kam, lawyer and former legislator Leonel Alves, and businessman David Chow Kam Fai.

The 20 members reappointed also include businessman Chui Sai Cheong, who is the vice-president of the Legislative Assembly and the elder brother of Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On.

The CPPCC National Committee is the central government’s top national advisory body.

Its members come from the nation’s four different jurisdictions – mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau.
