The local population climbed to 642,900 at the end of June, rising from 640,700 in March, according to the latest demographic figures from the Statistics and Census Service released on Monday.
Females accounted for 50.6 percent of the region’s population, which equates to 325,400 in total. The number of newborn infants slipped 2.9 percent in the second quarter compared to the first.
The region welcomed a total of 3,374 newborn babies in the first half of the year, a 2.15-percent year-on-year increase.
Up to 1,017 people passed away in the first six months of the year, 10 less than in the equivalent period of last year. Disease relating to tumors and circulation and respiratory systems were said to be the top three killers.
The region received a total of 1,666 immigrants from the mainland in the second quarter, yet only 385 of them have been granted residency permits allowing them to stay.
Non-resident workers totaled 180,523 at the end of June, an increase of 5,599 from the previous quarter.
The second quarter also saw 939 marriages, which numbered among a total of 1,891 marriage registrations in the first six months. (macaunews/ macaudailytimes)
