Macau, China, 28 Dec – Former Legislative Assembly president Susana Chou has been appointed a vice-director of the Macau Basic Law Committee under the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), according to the China News Service (CNS).
The appointment took place in Beijing last Saturday said today The Macau Post Daily.
Chou replaced veteran local journalist Lei Seng Chon, who was granted Macau’s highest decoration, the Grand Lotus, on December 19. Lei heads Macau’s biggest circulation newspaper, the Chinese-language Macao Daily News.
Qiao Xiaoyang, secretary-general of the NPC Standing Committee, was reappointed director of the Macau Basic Law Committee. The appointments were made by a meeting of the NPC Standing Committee at its 12th session last Saturday.
The Macau Basic Law Committee comprises 10 members. It has two vice-directors – Chou and Li Fei, who chairs the Commission for Legislative Affairs of the NPC.
Two members of the Macau Basic Law Committee retired from their posts. Apart from Lei, local researcher Ieong Wan Chong also chose to retire. Ieong was replaced by Alex Lai Iat Long, vice-rector of the University of Macau (UM).
The other committee members are Wang Zhenmin, Lei Pui Lam, Zhang Xiaoming, Paula Ling, Xu Ze and Chui Sai Cheong.
The Macau Basic Law Committee’s main task is to make suggestions to the NPC Standing Committee to assist it in interpreting the Basic Law and to study and make suggestions concerning proposals for amending the Basic Law before the proposals are put on the NPC agenda for debate and vote.
