The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) issued a heat stroke warning on Tuesday.
According to an SMG statement in the evening, a tropical depression to the east of the Philippines has intensified to a tropical storm, named Danas. The statement said that Danas was expected to move towards the north of the Philippines and Taiwan. “Affected by its outer subsidence air, it will be very hot in Macau in the next few days,” the statement said, adding that the maximum temperate will be around 35 degrees Celsius. “Please beware of heat stroke,” the statement warned.
Meanwhile, SMG Director Tang Iu Man told reporters on the sidelines of a press conference about the government’s civil protection measures on Tuesday that the chance of Danas affecting Macau was “low” – aside from the resulting heat wave.
Tang also said there was a 70 to 80 per cent chance that Danas will move towards Taiwan and Fujian.
According to the Macau Post Daily, Tang also said he expected the heat wave to keep affecting Macau for 10 days, reaching up to 35 degrees Celsius. According to Tang, his bureau expects between four and six tropical storms within less than 500 kilometres from Macau until early October. He also said that two or three severe typhoons were likely to reach the South China Sea over the next few months, adding that it was “too early” to say whether any of them will directly affect Macau.
